Gilson & Iara De Silva work with MEIB (Missao Evangelica aos Indios do Brasil) in Brazil.

They were students of Joe & Irene Rowley in the Bible Seminary of the North of Brazil,Sao Luis Maranhao. They met, married and then did some more training with Wycliffe Bible translators in Brasilia to equip them for work with the MEIB (Missao Evangelica aos Indios do Brasil), a mission that was formed some years ago to reach the tribal people.

They now work out of a small town in Maranhao state called Barra do Corda where live on a mission station with several other missionaries (German/Swiss/Americans and Brazilians).

When they are able, they travel to the indian village of the Canela Indians, some 300kms away.

Joe & Irene Rowley have this year raised over £1000 with sale of cards and T towels etc. for Gilson & Iara's work.

Dear Irene and All at Lymm Baptist Church.

We are writing to tell you how we are doing. Thank you so much for your prayers on our behalf.

At the present time Iara and I are helping out at the Bible Training Centre belonging to our mission, here in Barra. Where 8 Indians study from the Guajajara tribe and the Kaiapo-Xikrin tribe. They are studying (in Portuguese) how to become leaders back in their own villages.

We teach classes two afternoons each week. Iara looks after the children on Thursdays and Fridays (they bring their whole families to the course). We are also involved in the Night Bible School held in a local church for Non Indians. This happens on a Wednesday and Friday. So far we only have 6 students for that.

We are very homesick for the indian village and the Kanela indians. They always visit with us when they are in town for any reason, but we would love to be able to go to them in their own village.(Called the Village of the Pigs).

We plan to stay, helping at the Bible Centre and night school until the end of the year. Two missionaries are leaving for good. Returning to Germany and Switzerland to retire, which makes us two colleagues less for the work here.

We are really happy to help out, but don't want to forget our work in the village. We believe God has allowed us this time out, because of the political conflicts going on in the village. We believe and pray that the whole situation will soon be reversed.

On the 3rd October, there will be elections in Brasil, for posts as President, governors and senators. If the candidate for president is the one who the present President suggests, gets in lots of things will worsen for the missionary societies like MEIB (Missao Evangelico aos Indios do Brasil). There are many propositions being put forward to restrict the activity of missionaries to the Indian reserves. Also to try and restrict the growth of evangelical churches in Brazil. We are praying hard about these things.

One presidential candidate, who is evangelical, has been persecuted by the media, because of her stand against legalisation of abortion, same sex marriages and freeing up the use of cocaine and other drugs. Her testimony of faith was strong, but she has had to resign her position as secretary of the environment to the present government because she didn't agree with changes they were wanting to make. We tell you about these things because BRAZIL needs your prayers as well as our work with the Indians.

Dara is well. She is now two years and four months old.. She talks well and knows lots of Bible stories. She love books and jigsaws and can do one with 30 pieces very well alone. She is usually very active, so we know immediately if she is not well. During August and September- because of the dry season, there were a lot of fires and smoke around Barra and she was unwell with her throat because of this but she is better again.

Thank you for your continued prayers and financial support of us. We send special greetings to the house groups that pray for us, remembering Gloria and Iris who pray with you for us.

To everyone we send our love and hugs. In Jesus' love we are your children.

Gilson, Iara and Dara.

Translation by Irene

"To Him who is able to do everything well, more than we could ask or think, through the power, which works in us" Ephesians 3v19

Dear Mum Irene,

Thank you for your faithfulness in your missionary work for the Lord.

It was really good to speak with you on Sunday morning and know of your news.

We feel for you in the difficulties you are having with Pastor Joe. We know how difficult it must be to see someone you love suffering, it really gets to you. Because of this I wrote the verse at the top, to remind you of God's faithfulness in all our problems.

We, at the moment are going through difficult times. Since May this year we have not been allowed into the indian village. We cannot even go and collect our few possessions, that are in the believer Zequinhos' house.

We know that what is happening is because of politics and through satanic action.

Since we've been here in Barra we have been helping in the Bible training institute, belonging to the Indian work here.Iara and I have  been teaching daily in the mornings and two afternoons a week. On one side it is good, but we are really homesick for the village and living amongst the indians.

The indians come into Barra for different reasons, to buy and sell or such, and they call and see us in our house. But it isn't the same as being in their village with them,

With the arrival from furlough of the German missionaries Grupp, we are going to sit down and talk about our going with them to their village, which is KAnela but with a different dialect.

In the meantime, we are enjoying our times with Dara, and watching her grow and find out things as she does. She already knows a lot and loves to listen to Christian music for children and DVDs

We do thank you so much for your prayers and offerings on our behalf.

We send big hugs to you all, your family and the ones at church.

To God be the glory today and always, in Christ.

Pastor Gilson and Iara.
